![]() Kim, Mama and Daniel all are on the way to the temporary shelter in the church hall, the setting changes. Kim realize at this moment that they both may have more in common than they thought and they begin to break down barriers and throw away previous misconceptions that they may have had based on differences. Kim asks, “The cats were together?” I believe that as soon as Daniel and Mrs. ![]() Kim and Daniel are able to see how alike they really are. However, when the fire fighter brings both cats to the makeshift shelter, Mrs. Kim realized that they were more alike after they were both worried about their beloved cats missing at the same time. We believe that the plot event that got this theme across the most was the rescue of Jasmine and Mrs. Kim and just had negatively judged her in the past due to her difference in race. It is easy to interpret as readers that Mama did not actually know Mrs. ![]() Kim’s shop to actually inviting her over inside of her house. As you can see, there is a very significant change in Mama or Gena’s character, as she goes from refusing to even shop inside of Mrs. Kim and her cat over and says, “Perhaps when things settle down you and your cat will come over and share a dish of milk with us”. Kim have a rough night with the riots, Mama seems to have a change of heart, especially after seeing the two cats have a change of heart. Daniel also recalls not ever being able to understand her, and it seems to almost be annoyance to Daniel. Kim, a Korean shop owner’s store because “it is better if we buy from our own people”. In the very beginning of the story Daniel recalls of his mama telling him that they stay away from Mrs. Daniel’s mama’s character is very dynamic and does a lot of changing and positive growing in the course of Smoky Night. ![]() The character development that we see from Daniel’s mama is a great way that Bunting was able to get her theme across. This tragic and traumatizing moment actually helped unite a community that usually was not interested in being near one another. Before, these riots and before they were forced to evacuate their building, they were not fond of one another and negatively judged each other based on appearances and race and ethnicity. This tragedy actually helped bring others together, such as Mrs. We felt that the title, Smoky Night helped relate to this theme because the actual “smoky night” referenced the tragedy that everyone within the neighborhood was experiencing during the L.A. We feel that the most important thing Bunting was trying to do after she published Smoky Night was remind others to accept one another despite any kind of difference. However, after reading the story over and over again countless times, we decided to focus on the most important message that we felt Bunting was trying to send which was, negatively judging others because of differences need to be diminished. While reading this book, the material is so dense and deep that we had a hard time choosing one particular theme to focus on. ![]() We read Smoky Night by: Eve Bunting, a very thought provoking story about tragedy, race riots, negative judgment, and bonding. ![]()
